i think they are trying to make all the characters more dynamic maybe?
Like they made michael more dynamic in the second season. In the first season he was mostly just annoying, but in the first episode of the second season (the dundees) they had us actually feel bad for him for the first time which was shocking and a good move I think.
ok, so i broke down and bought that episode on itunes. they resolved that quite nicely (while holding up their product placement bargain with staples to the fullest) last night though. aha what a good show.
